The French TOTALFINAELF confirmed that it is negotiating the acquisition of the a 9.5% stake in the capital, held by BP AMOCO, in the giant offshore oilfield of Kachagan in Kazakhstan. According to the Wall Street Journal, the value of this acquisition could total USD 400 million in both assets and in cash. The French oil company already holds 14.3% of this oilfield.
