Fischler favours more sustainable agriculture

Brussels, 19/01/2001 (Agence Europe) - Commissioner Franez Fischler, taking part in the agriculture trade exhibition in Berlin, "Grüne Woche", acknowledged the necessity of more environment-friendly agriculture. He noted that a policy debate on agricultural policy would be "not just useful, but essential". He added that Agenda 2000 already makes it possible to promote ecological agriculture with the aid of Community funds. In 1999, some 60 million euros (DEM 120 million) of European and national funding were spent on organic farming in Germany. "More is undoubtedly possible", he affirmed. Member States now have the possibility of limiting agricultural aid payments to large farms and using these funds for additional environmental measures. "France and the United Kingdom already do this, but not Germany", recalled Mr Fischler. "It's no secret that the Commission wanted more for Agenda 2000. The Member States must use existing potential to develop more sustainable farming", he noted, going on to add that reform of agricultural policy must continue. "I draw the following lesson from the BSE crisis: we must resolutely and more forcefully promote means of production that are more respectful of nature and animals", he added.

Mentioning the assignment of the agriculture portfolio to a Green Minister, Mr Fischler stated: "When it comes to the environment, improved quality and taking consumer interests into account, Minister Künast will not have to try and break down the doors in Brussels: they are already wide open."
