New York, 27/11/2000 (Agence Europe) - In New York on Sunday, the EU High Representative for Cfsp, Javier Solana took part in the work of the Fact-Finding Committee chaired by the former American Senator George Mitchell, instructed by the Sharm el-Sheik Summit to seek information on the wave of violence that has led to the deadlock in the peace process between the Israelis and Palestinians. The Committee, which includes the former Turkish President Suleyman Demirel, former Norwegian Foreign Minister Thornbjoern Jagland and former American Senator Warren Rudman, met Israeli and Palestinian representatives on that occasion and called on both parties to present their views, "including their assessment of exactly what has happened has why it has happened", says a press release. The Committee, that announced that it would be going to the region in the near future, stressed that its goal would be to "break the cycle of violence so that the parties can resume their efforts towards peace", and would work in close collaboration with the Israelis and Palestinians, so as to reach an "independent and objective assessment" of events. Finally, the Committee thanked President Clinton (whose efforts contributed to setting it up), for his efforts in the service of peace in the Middle East.
