04/10/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Italian Government has agreed on a single candidature - that of Emma Bonino, former European Commissioner (notably for humanitarian aid) - for the position of UN High Commissioner for Refugees. In talks with Kofi Annan in Strasbourg, Commission President Romano Prodi regretted the lack of a single European candidature: indeed, other candidatures have been put forward, notably by Denmark (see other article on page 3 for Kofi Annan's press conference).
