Agreement of principle on provisional "Eurojust" unit, preparation of strengthened measures against financial fraud

Brussels, 29/09/2000 (Agence Europe) - "The French Presidency will leave a very big impression on the European Area for Justice and Security". This was how Commissioner Antonio Vitorino welcomed the progress made during the Justice/Home Affairs Council on Thursday, under the chairmanship of French Justice Minister Elisabeth Guigou. According to the Commissioner, there are two elements which justify such praise: a) the prospect of the Jumbo JHA/Ecofin Council, of which the aim, during the afternoon of 17 October, will be to "send a clear political message on the priority that must be given to cooperation between the judicial and police institutions and financial market regulators", with a view to strengthening the fight against financial delinquency, and money laundering in particular; b) the policy guidelines agreement with a view to establishing a provisional Eurojust unit, which will be an "irreplaceable contribution by the Presidency" for catching up the judicial delay in the European area.

EUROPE will come back to all the Council results in detail.
