Brussels, 19/09/2000 (Agence Europe) - Commenting on the attitude of the British government on the subject of the future Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, British Liberal Democrat Andrew Duff (European Parliament rapporteur on the charter with Johannes Voggenhuber), declared: "The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights will put the citizen at the heart of European integration. It should be welcomed both by those who wish the EU well, as well as by those who fear that the EU will abuse its powers. The British Government'(s approach to date has been f earful, conservative and sceptical. Mr Blair is in danger of leaving Britain isolated if he seeks to dilute the force or weaken the content of the Charter". He went on to add that the European Liberals will continue to fight to make fundamental rights the "building block of the European Union's constitution".
