07/08/2000 (Agence Europe) - Following Pascal Lamy (see EUROPE of 4 August, p.4), the American head of international trade Charlene Barshefsky also protested to Australia against the restrictions imposed by New South Wales to foreign press television agency teams during the Olympic Games in Sidney next September, restrictions that limit the coverage of the event by the AP agency. In the meantime, Canberra indicates that the Australian trade Minister Mark Vaile answered a letter from Mr Lamy that threatened to denounce the restrictions to the WTO. According to Reuters, Mr Vaile raised another letter, left unanswered, which he had written three weeks earlier to the International Olympic Committee to underline that the Australian government had no responsibility in this case as it lay with the sub-federal level concerned.
