Brussels, 28/07/2000 (Agence Europe) - In a letter from the Ambassador of France in Washington, the French Presidency of the EU asked President Bill Clinton to commute the death sentence handed down by a federal court against Juan Raul Garza to life imprisonment. Mr Garza was sentenced for three murders in a drug-related case. "The European Union encourages you, through a gesture of clemency towards Mr Garza that we strongly support, to declare a moratorium on federal executions", adds the letter. This federal execution (the first since 1963) is scheduled for 5 August.
