Romano Prodi welcomes progress made in Okinawa on issues defended by Commission

Brussels, 24/07/2000 (Agence Europe) - European Commission President Romano Prodi welcomed the results of the G8 meeting in Okinawa, on issues he holds dear: "Discussions of the G8 Summit reflect the concerns expressed in recent months by the Commission regarding contagious illness (AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis), food safety, information technology and world trade.", says the President in a press release. "It is a question of topics that can appear without any relation to one another, but that demonstrate that the leaders of the G8 must act responsibly to reduce the intolerable gap between those that have and those that do not. Europe and its partners will act rapidly to implement the decisions taken at the Summit". The Commission highlights five fields defended by Romano Prodi in Tokyo, on which the G8 announced initiatives: 1) a new strategy in the fight against infectious illnesses together with financial commitments that will be set out at a conference in Japan in the autumn; 2) the setting up of a panel of wold food security; 3) the adoption of the Okinawa Charter on the "Global information society", rejecting "digital segregation"; 4) the commitment to intensify WTO effort to launch a new round of negotiations "before the end of the years"; 5) the commitment to launch a "new partnership" with countries that do not belong to the G8, civil society, private sectors and NGOs.
