Assembly keeps pressure up on Russia for political settlement to Chechen conflict

Strasbourg, 29/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which had, in April (see EUROPE of 8 April, p.5), called for the suspension of Russia following the serious violation of human rights in Chechnya, refused, on Thursday in Strasbourg, to give way to Russia pressure and to the appeals by Secretary General Walter Schwimmer and Italian Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini, who currently chairs the Committee of Ministers.
