The number one airline in America and the world, UAL -UNITED AIRLINES- (turnover of USD 18 billion in 1999 with 100,000 employees) will be buying its competitor US AIRWAYS (turnover of USD 8.6 billion in 1999 with a workforce of 46,300) for USD 11.6 billion, of which 4.3 billion in cash, corresponding to 60 dollars a share. Combining their activities, the two airlines will offer 6,500 flights a day.
