10/05/2000 (Agence Europe) - On 7 May, the Portuguese Presidency adopted the following declaration on the further attack in the Basque Country that cost a journalist his life: "The Presidency on berhalf of the EU expresses the EU's shock at the assassination this morning in Guipuzcoa of Mr. Jose Luis Lopes de la Calle, a journalist with El Mundo. The EU condemns terrorism of any form and for any purpose, but this attack on one of democracy's fundamental principles - the freedom of expression and of the media - is particularly heinous. The EU extends its condolences to the family of the victim, expresses its solidarity with the government and people of Spain and calls on those responsible for such deeds to recognise the imperative to respect fundamental human rights."
