In the United States, VF CORPORATION (jeans, lingerie and sportswear; turnover $5.5 billion in 1999) has made a friendly purchase bid of $25 million, or $2 per share, on its compatriot THE NORTH FACE, specialised in sportswear, which is in financial difficulties with before tax losses of $75 million in 1999.
