In 2025, battery electric vehicles recorded the strongest growth among new passenger car registrations, but non-plug-in hybrid vehicles still dominate the market, according to Eurostat.
1.89 million new battery electric passenger cars were registered in the EU last year, up 29.7% compared with 2024. The previous year, registrations had fallen by 6% compared with 2023, to 1.46 million units.
This recovery brought the total fleet of battery electric cars to 7.59 million vehicles in 2025, compared with 5.77 million a year earlier, an increase of 31.5%. This development is part of a broader trend of recovery in the electric vehicle market. According to the latest data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), global electric car sales rose sharply in the first half of 2026 (see EUROPE 13920/5).
Plug-in hybrid vehicles also recorded strong growth, with 1.03 million new registrations in 2025 (+34.2%). Non-plug-in hybrids posted more moderate growth (+13.4%), but remain the most popular category: 3.62 million new vehicles of this type were registered, far exceeding the other categories.
By contrast, registrations of passenger cars running exclusively on diesel fell by 22%, to 1.07 million units. Petrol vehicles recorded a comparable decline of 18.4%, with 2.98 million new cars registered.
