Eurochambres, the association of European chambers of commerce and industry, sent a letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on Tuesday 23 June, to draw her attention to industry’s demands in connection with the revision of the Emissions Trading System (ETS), scheduled for 15 July.
According to Eurochambres President Vladimír Dlouhý, this revision is “a test of Europe’s ability to reconcile climate ambition and industrial competitiveness”.
The organisation is calling for a “more gradual” decarbonisation pathway, an extension of allowances until 2050, instead of a gradual reduction as provided for under the current framework, as well as an extension of the allocation of free allowances both for the ETS and for the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), without conditionality.
Eurochambres also refers to its concerns over industrial competitiveness because of the recent update of benchmark values (see EUROPE 13889/17) and is calling for more measures “to further refine the Market Stability Reserve” (see EUROPE 13841/1).
