28/05/2026 (Agence Europe) – The German and Dutch defence ministries announced on Thursday 28 May that 1 German-Netherlands Corps (1GNC) would take command of NATO’s eastern flank, “specifically in the Estonia and Latvia region”. “NATO will formalise 1GNC’s new role this summer. 1GNC will then assume command and control of NATO- and national defence land units stationed in Estonia and Latvia. This gives 1GNC a significant responsibility for directing exercises and other preparatory activities; in worst case for defending the eastern flank. This responsibility currently lies with Multinational Corps North East (MNC NE)”, the ministries stressed in a joint statement. Until the beginning of 2028, command of 1GNC is held by Germany. In addition to the two countries, 14 Allies currently provide staff to the headquarters. (CG)
