07/02/24 (Agence Europe) – Olivier Guersent, the European Commission’s Director-General for Competition, has defended the European antitrust model in an op-ed published in the Financial Times on Wednesday 7 February in response to an editorial by Rana Foroorah comparing the European and American antitrust models. She felt that the European model was outdated and technocratic, particularly when it came to the digital age. Mr Guersent reviews the European record on the application of competition rules, which he considers to be unrivalled. Citing the Digital Markets Act, he believes that European antitrust action in this area is the oldest and most solid. He emphasises that European application of competition rules focuses on the effectiveness of competition and the damage that can be caused to it. (EV)
