European Commission does not take availability and affordability of food for granted

On Wednesday 4 January, the European Commission said that while “food availability is not at stake in Europe today”, trends and the combination of factors such as climate change, environmental degradation, the economic consequences of Covid-19 and the Russian invasion of Ukraine show that “availability, access (affordability), use and stability cannot be taken for granted in the short or long term”.

According to the Commission’s analysis of the drivers of food security, some of these drivers can become food security risks and show the vulnerabilities of our food system, if not properly addressed.

The real challenge for policy makers is to pave the way for a transition to a sustainable and resilient food system that meets and reconciles time short and long-term needs at the same”, the Commission says, adding that a systemic approach is needed.

This analysis should provide the Commission’s services with a framework to verify and assess the multiple dimensions related to food security in order to advance relevant policy initiatives.
