Foreign banks operating in EU account for 12% of total assets of European banking sector

On 1 June 2021, out of 3,688 credit institutions operating in the European Union, 360 banks - 243 subsidiaries and 117 branches - were controlled by non-EU entities, according to a report published by the European Banking Authority (EBA) on Monday 3 October.

These foreign banks hold 12% of the total assets of the European banking sector, 11.4% of outstanding loans, 6.6% of debt securities and 31.4% of derivatives. And those headquartered in the US or UK have 75% of the market share held by...
