appalled” by Russian military aggression, G7 prepares tough sanctions

The G7 leaders, “appalled” by Russian military aggression, condemned on Thursday 24 February Russia’s “unprovoked and totally unjustified attack on the democratic state of Ukraine [...] preceded by fabricated claims and baseless allegations”.

In a joint statement, they warn that they will put forward “severe and coordinated economic and financial sanctions”, also calling on members of the international community to condemn the attack in the strongest terms and to stand by Ukraine.

President Putin has reintroduced war to the European continent. He placed himself on the wrong side of history. We are determined to defend peace, stability and international law”, the leaders added. They called on Moscow to “stop the bloodshed, de-escalate immediately and withdraw its forces from Ukraine”.

United in their support for Ukraine, the leaders expressed their readiness to provide humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering, especially of refugees and people displaced by Russian aggression.

Beyond Russia, G7 leaders condemned Belarus’ involvement in the aggression, calling on the country to respect its international obligations. However, they did not announce any measures against Minsk.
