EU Member States received many more first-time asylum applications in second quarter of 2021, according to Eurostat

24/09/2021 (Agence Europe)The number of first-time asylum seekers, at 103,895 in the second quarter of 2021, was 115% higher than in the second quarter of 2020 (48,370 first-time applicants) and 9% higher than in the first quarter of 2021 (95,265), Eurostat said on Friday 24 September. Although this rate has risen, it is still 28% lower than the levels seen before the pandemic. In the second quarter of 2021, Syrians accounted for about one fifth of applicants, followed by Afghans at 13%...
