03/05/2021 (Agence Europe) – The German government announced, on Friday 30 April, that it would quickly adapt its climate law to take into account the conclusions of the country’s Constitutional Court, according to the AP news agency. The day before, Germany’s highest court had ruled that the current objectives of this law are “insufficient” and “do not comply with fundamental rights”. In particular, the Court criticised the fact that the text does not include “sufficient requirements” on how the country intends to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions for the period of 2031-2050. “The challenged provisions do violate the freedoms of the complainants, some of whom are still very young. The regulations irreversibly postpone high emission reduction burdens until periods after 2030”, the Karlsruhe judges concluded. (DG)
