UN backs solidarity tax to reduce inequalities exacerbated by pandemic

Brussels, 13/04/2021 (Agence Europe)The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, gave his support on Monday 12 April at the Economic and Social Council’s Forum on Financing for Development for countries to introduce a solidarity tax to reduce inequalities exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. I urge governments to consider a solidarity or wealth tax on those who have profited during the pandemic, to reduce extreme inequalities”, he said according to Reuters. Several economists have already looked into the use of taxation to pay the Covid-19 bill (see EUROPE 12506/20). Some MEPs have also tabled ideas, including a temporary European wealth tax (see EUROPE 12529/8). The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also supported the idea of such a tax recently. (MF)
