22/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Committee of the Regions called for a threshold to be set in the Directive aimed at establishing adequate minimum wages, below which a minimum wage should never fall, in an opinion adopted (170 votes to 38 with 14 abstentions) at the plenary session on Friday 19 March. Thus, while recalling that Member States remain fully competent to set legal minimum wages, the Committee members recommend that Member States ensure “in any event” that these wages do not fall below 60% of the gross median wage and 50% of the gross average wage. Unsurprisingly, the opponents of the opinion were mainly delegations from the Nordic countries, which have shown themselves to be very resistant to the Directive in all the European institutions (see EUROPE 12615/4).
