Nine Member States (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta and the Netherlands) sent a letter to the European Commission on Wednesday 10 March asking it to present a proposal for a phase-out date for the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans in the European Union.
Setting a deadline will, they said, give clear signals to car manufacturers, fleet owners and consumers to accelerate the transition from road transport to emission-free mobility.
