28/01/2021 (Agence Europe) – “Decarbonisation strategies aiming at carbon neutrality invariably suffer from a lack of detailed information on the end uses of gas in a carbon-neutral energy system”, according to a report published on Thursday 28 January by theInstitute for Sustainable Development & International Relations(IDDRI). Analysing the way the role of gas is presented in the French and German decarbonisation scenarios, this think tank stresses that gas infrastructure needs will depend on many factors, in particular the demand for gas for heating, the role of gas in transport, the interaction between gas and electricity and the degree of substitution of natural gas by low-carbon gases such as biomethane and hydrogen. According to the report, there are, in particular, significant uncertainties about the technical conditions and cost of upgrading pipelines to transport hydrogen.
