Commission approves aid for production of electricity from renewable sources in Ireland

The European Commission approved on Monday 20 July a support scheme for electricity production from renewable sources in Ireland. The measure will contribute to the achievement of EU environmental objectives without unduly distorting competition.

According to Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President in charge of competition policy, this aid scheme for the production of electricity from renewable sources is in line with the objectives of the European Green Deal for “a low-carbon and environmentally sustainable economy”.

Ireland notified the ‘Renewable Electricity Support Scheme’ ('RESS'), to support the production of electricity from renewable sources, in particular solar photovoltaic and wind power.

The RESS will contribute to the EU’s renewable energy target and help Ireland meet its national target of moving away from fossil fuels and achieving a 70% share of renewable energy in its electricity mix by 2030.

The RESS, whose total budget is estimated at between €7.2 and €12.5 billion, will continue until 2025. During this period, aid for the production of electricity from renewable sources granted under the scheme will be allocated through auctions. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
