MEP Pierre Karleskind (Renew Europe, France) is expected to take over from Chris Davies (Liberal Democrats) as Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Fisheries, several sources told us on Thursday 30 January.
Due to the United Kingdom's exit from the EU, Chris Davies has to leave his post as an MEP at the same time as the other British MEPs.
Mr Karleskind should step down as Vice-Chairman of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection.
Mr Karleskind, who is an oceanographer, has been very active in recent months in helping Breton fishermen find solutions to the problems arising from the technical measures decided last December by the Committee on Fisheries to safeguard cod and whiting stocks in the Celtic Sea.
Fisheries is a strategic sector for France. Alain Cadec (EPP, France) had chaired the Parliament Committee on Fisheries from 2014 to 2019. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
