UN High Commissioner for Refugees alarmed at number of deaths in Mediterranean

On Monday 3 September, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (HCR) published a new report which expresses alarm at the rise in the number of deaths in the Mediterranean Sea, a sea crossing that has become “deadlier then ever”.

The report (entitled “Desperate Journeys”) shows that so far this year over 1,600 people have died or disappeared in their attempt to reach Europe, the organisation states in a press release.  Although the total number of people arriving in Europe...
