16/02/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 15 February, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini called for the release of Swedish publisher Gui Minhai, who is of Chinese origin and who has been detained since mid-January. "We expect the Chinese authorities to allow Mr Gui to meet Swedish diplomatic and medical staff, and to release him so that he can be reunited with his daughter and family", Mogherini said in a press release, adding that the EU fully supported the efforts of the Swedish government in this case. "China's actions are in breach of international rules on consular support and raise serious questions about China's application of the rule of law, including the prohibition of arbitrary deprivation of liberty", she stated. Mogherini also said that the EU took the situation "very seriously". (CG)
