08/11/2017 (Agence Europe) – The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), which was transformed into a political movement since laying down its weapons in compliance with the peace agreement signed with the Colombian government (see EUROPE 11609), is expected to be officially removed from the EU list of terrorist organisations during the EU Foreign Affairs Council on Monday 13 November. This was approved without debate at the meeting of national ambassadors to the EU (Coreper) on Wednesday 8 November. Funds belonging to FARC in the EU, which had been frozen, will be released when the decision on removing FARC from the EU list is published in the Official Journal of the EU. In September 2016, the EU Council suspended the restrictive measures that had been in place against FARC since 2002 (see EUROPE 11633). The leader of FARC will be a candidate for the presidency in Colombia next May. (MB)
