In a resolution adopted on 1 November, the Euronest parliamentary assembly – which comprises MEPs and parliamentarians from the Eastern Partnership countries except Belarus (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine) – called for security cooperation to be strengthened between the EU and Eastern Partnership countries.
In a resolution on "the future of the Eastern Partnership - combatting hybrid challenges and security threats together", the parliamentarians want the statement from the Eastern Partnership summit, scheduled for 24 November, to highlight further promotion of "security sector reforms, implementation of integrated border management, disrupting organised crime, tackling hybrid threats, countering terrorism and preventing radicalisation, enhancing cybersecurity, and strengthening disaster prevention".
The parliamentarians also advocate "enhancing, where appropriate, security dialogue and cooperation in the area of common security and defence policy".
The parliamentary assembly believes that the statement to be adopted at the summit should include certain "strategically important" elements, such as the development of trans-border cooperation and people-to-people contacts, the bolstering of energy security, the harmonisation of digital markets, and the setting up of a new regional economic diplomacy framework for increased trade and investment promotion throughout the region.
At its meeting in Kiev, Ukraine, on 30-31 October, the parliamentary assembly adopted six other resolutions dealing respectively with: media freedom, fighting youth unemployment, women in the labour market, the Paris Climate Agreement, the worsening human rights situation in the regions of Transnistria, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Crimea and some regions in Donetsk and Lugansk, and lethal autonomous weapons.
