Commemoration of lives lost in Lampedusa

03/10/2017 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 3 October in Lampedusa, on behalf of the European Commission, the European Commissioner for Migration, Dimitris Avramopoulos, commemorated the 360 victims of the tragedy that occurred off the Lampedusa coast on 3 October 2013. These people lost their lives at sea attempting to get into the EU. The Commissioner stated, “Today, we are remembering the many lives lost, as well as the lives destroyed and hopes broken of those attempting to reach these shores fleeing war and persecution”. He also highlighted the efforts made by the Commission since then to save lives. “Since 2015, 620,000 lives have been saved in the Aegean and Mediterranean thanks to the Italian and Greek rescue operations, as well as the Triton and Poseidon operations”. Last week, he proposed a new resettlement exercise and legal economic migration channels. (SP)
