"The waters situated off the coast of the Western Sahara are included in the fisheries agreement concluded between the EU and Morocco", European Commissioner for Fisheries Karmenu Vella stated in response to MEPs on Monday 29 May, at the risk of fuelling the ongoing polemic and of placing the EU in the position of arbitrator between the two strategic partners – Morocco and Algeria – that are in the midst of fierce rivalry and internal upheaval.
