Erdogan warns that European Parliament vote on freezing negotiations will be meaningless

23/11/2016 (Agence Europe)Even before the European Parliament has voted on Thursday 24 November on the resolution demanding accession negotiations with Turkey to be frozen, the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has warned that this vote will not have any importance at all. During a conference of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Mr Erdogan announced that MEPs “Will vote on EU negotiations with Turkey. Whatever the result, this vote will not have any importance in our eyes”. He added, “We have clearly shown on many occasions that we have been respecting European values better than many EU countries but we have not noticed any support from our Western partners. No promises have been respected”. On Tuesday 22 November during the debate, MEPs concerned about violations of the rule of law, said that given the current state of events, it was not possible to continue discussions (see EUROPE 11673).
