At the European Parliament’s plenary in Strasbourg on 24-27 October, MEPs will adopt their negotiating position for the EU’s draft budget for 2017 and will discuss the mid-term review of the EU’s multiannual financial framework (MFF) for 2014-2020 (see EUROPE 11650).
In the morning of Wednesday 26 October, the European Parliament will assess the outcome of the 20-21 October European summit in a debate attended by the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, and the president of the European Council, Donald Tusk (see other articles).
On Tuesday 25 October, the European Commission will unveil its work programme for 2017 (see EUROPE 11628) and on the same day, the European Parliament will discuss implementation of a new EU mechanism for monitoring the state of democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights in EU member states.
MEPs, the Council and the Commission will evaluate progress on implementing security measures (counter-terrorism) and challenges that need to be addressed.
The Parliament will express its views on the rules to set upper limits on trans fats (see EUROPE 11636).
Other issues on the agenda include the European Commission’s proposal to harmonise the tax basis for companies (see EUROPE 11647) and threats against journalists in Turkey. Finally, the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament’s political groups will select a winner from the shortlist of three for the Sakharov Prize 2016 for freedom of thought (see EUROPE 11643).
