On Saturday 1 October, the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said there was no obstacle to Turkey becoming a member of the EU.
He said in a speech at the opening of the Turkish parliament: "If the European Union wants to admit Turkey as a full member based on an objective assessment, there is no obstacle before that. We are ready for this."
