02/09/2016 (Agence Europe) – France will continue the “stage by stage” dismantlement of the migrant camp in Calais, the country’s interior minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, stated on Thursday 1 September. He travelled to Calais on Friday 2 September to see for himself that his pledge was being put into effect. “We dismantled the southern section at the start of March and have already started on the northern section”, he said on Friday in an interview with local daily Nord Littoral. Alongside the dismantling of the Calais “Jungle” (see EUROPE 11453), the minister wants close to 8,000 additional reception and housing places to be created in a number of reception centres. Cazeneuve said that, at present, there are 6,900 migrants in the northern section of the Calais heathland. A number of associations assert, on the other hand, that the number is over 9,000. (SP)
