31/08/2016 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 30 August, the European Union condemned another terrorist car bomb attack perpetrated that day by Al-Shabab, close to a hotel in Mogadishu, which left 22 people dead. In a statement published on Tuesday evening by the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU explained that this suicide attack "is yet another attempt to disrupt the Somali process towards democracy and state building, following decades of unrest and Civil War". The EU expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and its spokesperson emphasised that "the upcoming electoral process will be key to democratic universal suffrage in 2020". The spokesperson also provided assurances that the EU "will remain a staunch supporter of the building of a stable and democratic Somalia, benefiting its population and the region as a whole". (AN)
