Pollution from off-road vehicle engines, European Parliament paves way for adoption of new regulation

Brussels 05/07/2016 (Agence Europe) - A new step was made in Strasbourg on Tuesday 5 July towards adoption of a regulation that will made a real dent in air pollution from 2018 onwards (CO, HC, NOx and fine particulates) from lawnmowers. bulldozers, tractors, diesel locomotives, barges and other inland boats and other off-road ,motor engines.

Meeting in plenary, the MEPs confirmed by a large majority (623 to 57 with 27 abstentions) the informal interinstitutional agreement reached in first reading on 7 April under the Dutch Presidency on this new regulation to reduce polluting emissions, updating and simplifying the reception system by type of internal combustions engine for mobile, off-road engines (EMNR) (EUROPE 11540, 11526). Rapporteur Elisabetta Gardini (EPP, Italy) said they had tightened up the limits suggested by the Commission for a number of types of engine, while maintaining a reasonable approach, so that industry can rapidly comply with the regulation.

The new regulation covers more types of engine, includes simply administrative procedures and improves application of the law and monitoring of the market. The agreement will also need to be approved by the Council of the EU, which will adopt the regulation. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
