31/05/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU welcomes verdict in Hissène Habré trial. Former president of Chad from 1982 to 1990 Hissène Habré was sentenced by the Extraordinary African Chambers in Dakar, Senegal, on Monday 30 May to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity, war crimes and torture. The ruling was welcomed by the EU. This verdict “delivers justice to the victims who have been waiting for this moment for over 25 years. It will also help reconciliation in Chad”, stated a press release from the spokesperson of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini. “This historic trial … sets an important precedent for international justice and the fight against impunity”, said the spokesperson, praising the “real determination” shown by the “Senegalese authorities, the associations of victims' families and Human Rights Watch” to bring this case to court.
