23/05/2016 (Agence Europe) - Spain, United Kingdom, Denmark, Poland and Albania obtain European Road Safety Awards. On Friday 20 May, as part of the European Road Safety Charter initiative launched in 2004, the European Commission awarded the 2016 prize for road safety excellency to 6 initiatives in Europe. Two 'school challenge' prizes were awarded to Spanish (Colegio Público Miguel de Cervantes in Gijón) and British (Lockerbie Academy) projects and three prizes ('best practice') were awarded to two Danish projects (Børneulykkesfonden and Codan Forsikring), as well as one Polish project (Centrum Bezpieczeñstwa Ruchu Drogowego) and one Albanian (ACA Automobile Club). The former European Commissioner for Transport, Jacques Barrot, received a posthumous special jury prize for having been the first person to organise this award. Road safety remains a priority for the current Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc. The 2015 results were, however, rather poor (see EUROPE 11522). (PH)
