23/05/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU denounces sentence against human rights activist Narges Mohammadi in Iran. On Friday evening, 20 May, the spokesperson for the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy described the 10-year prison sentence meted out to the Iranian human rights activist, Narges Mohammadi, as "a worrying development". She also called on the reigning authorities to take Ms Mohammadi's health into consideration and which is "deteriorating". The spokesperson pointed out that the activist had been working peacefully to improve human and women's rights and for the gradual abolition of the death penalty. The spokesperson emphasised that "The right to express opinion in a non-violent manner is at the very core of the universal declaration for Human Rights and the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights, to which Iran is a party". Ms Mohammadi was charged for meeting and plotting against the Islamic Republic, as well as spreading propaganda against the regime and for collaborating with a militant organisation that supports the gradual abolition of the death penalty, a cause that is banned in Iran.
