11/05/2016 (Agence Europe) - Schengen border control measures extended. On Thursday 12 May, the Development Council is expected to adopt the Commission proposal of 4 May on activating Article 29 (formerly Article 26) of the Schengen Border Code. This will allow five countries and four member states to extend control measures at their internal borders for six months. The six-month renewal will apply to Germany, Austria, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, and these countries will reportedly be expected to make a monthly report on the situation at their borders. The Commission seeks to scrap all these measures by the end of November. According to one source, Greece, Hungary and Slovenia have expressed reservations about these measures affecting them but have not made any strong objections. The measures only focus on land and maritime controls and do not affect control measures in airports. (SP)
