EU welcomes formation of interim government

Brussels, 29/03/2016 (Agence Europe) - Welcoming the formation of the interim government in Haiti, the EU called on Monday 28 March for the electoral process to be completed - a crucial next step towards a return to constitutional order.

“Ratification of the general policy statement of Haitian Prime Minister Enex Jean Charles is a significant step towards a return to constitutional order in Haiti. It allows an interim government to be sworn in under the terms of the tripartite agreement of 5 February. This agreement assures the continuity of the state and the continuation of the electoral cycle begun in 2015” said the spokesperson for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini in an official statement.

The EU calls on all parties to redouble their efforts to put in place a provisional electoral council speedily so that the necessary measures can be taken and the results of the municipal elections published. “These steps are crucial so that the voices of the men and women of Haiti can be heard and they can democratically and freely choose their leaders, both local and national”, the statement says.

As a member of the ACP (Africa, Caribbean, Pacific) group of states linked to the EU by the Cotonou Agreement, Haiti can count on the EU to support it in all its efforts and help it as it develops, the spokesperson stated, noting that “only stable institutions and a system of governance which enjoys democratic legitimacy will allow the impact of the European Union aid to be significant and lasting”.
