Significant progress on Gaza desalination project

Brussels, 02/03/2016 (Agence Europe) - Following a final agreement on financing the project for a desalination plant on the Gaza Strip, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) has affirmed that “significant progress” has been made.

The UfM says on its website that this broad-scale desalination plant is aimed at responding to the water crisis on the Gaza Strip, where 95% of the water is not for drinking due to excessive pumping of the Gaza coastal water table.

This progress was recorded after a meeting on 15 February attended by representatives from the government of Palestine and Israel, and representatives from the European Commission and office of the Quartet. According to the UfM, the meeting enabled progress to be made in implementing this project, which has been approved by the 43 UfM member states. The Israeli delegation confirmed its political support for the project and committed to facilitating the construction of the plant. The Palestinian delegation (Palestinian Authority) said it was ready to take all the measures necessary for implementing the project. (Original version in French by Fathi B'Chir)
