29/01/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU calls on Minsk to implement OSCE recommendations on the elections. On Thursday 28 January, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn called on Belarus to “fully implement the OSCE recommendations” on the elections, “especially in view of the forthcoming parliamentary elections” in September 2016. The final report of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) on the presidential elections in Belarus on 11 October 2015 was published on 28 January and recommends a comprehensive and inclusive review of national legislation, to bring it into line with international obligations and standards for conducting democratic elections. The report calls in particular for the electoral code to be changed in order to ensure the integrity and transparency of all stages of the electoral process. Hahn tweeted his reiteration of the EU's “strong support” for the ODIHR's observation methodology. (CG)
