19/10/2015 (Agence Europe) - Hungary reprimanded by Commission for its border-closure measures. On Monday 19 October, the European Commission stated that putting walls and fences up at EU member state borders was not a solution, and that walls between the member states themselves had “no place” in the EU, as European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said on 6 October. The Commission's response came as Hungary closed its main border crossing points during the night of Friday 16 to Saturday 17 October - just as Hungary had closed its border with Serbia a month ago which resulted in an influx of migrants to Slovenia. Hungary notified the Commission of this closure, but was not obliged to do so as Croatia is not in the Schengen area. The Commission says that European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos spoke about the situation to leaders in Slovenia, Hungary and Croatia over the weekend.
