16/09/2015 (Agence Europe) - Mobility Week (16-22 September). On Wednesday 16 September, European Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc officially launched European Mobility Week alongside Michael Cramer MEP (Greens/EFA, Germany), who chairs the European Parliament's transport and tourism committee. Mobility Week will be dedicated to the intermodality of urban transport, so as to promote the combination of different, and alternative, forms of transport in town. Bulc stated that intermodality, in addition to cycling and car-sharing, is particularly important for the environment and enables citizens to come closer to one another, and growth to be generated. It seems an ironic coincidence that the same day as European Mobility Week started, European taxi drivers blocked the road traffic in Brussels in order to protest against Uber, the online platform putting voluntary drivers in touch with customers. Uber's services are currently being assessed by the Commission (see EUROPE 11379). (PH)
