Brussels, 26/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - The European citizens' initiative (ECI) Right2Water, which called on the Commission to take action to have water recognised as a common good, for many, brought little result. It was, however, given fresh impetus in Brussels on Thursday 25 June within the European Parliament's environment committee.
Backing its rapporteur, Lynn Boylan (GUE/NGL, Ireland), the committee, which is chaired by Giovanni La Via (EPP, Italy), urged the European Commission to take action to follow up on the call from EU citizens, (see EUROPE 11106 and 11045). Boylan was delighted that the committee had adopted her recommendations on this divisive issue. The Commission's only reaction having been to announce revision of the legislation on water quality, Boylan warned that the weakness of that response could discredit the ECI system. (Aminata Niang)
